Kora
The big cat ran through the forest, underbrush crashing around her and buffering her face. She didn’t care. It felt good to stretch her legs and forget her troubles, even if only temporarily; Cougars were sprinting creatures after all, not long distance runners. Kora had always liked her cougar from the best, which with some thought she had decided made sense. Cougars are naturally reclusive animals, staying to low populations territories, spread apart from their own kind. Kora could relate.
Soon feeling herself become fatigued, Kora eased her pace and slowly came to a stop, her mouth open and panting as she took in the scents of her surroundings. She smelt a great many things: growing vegetation, rotting vegetation, a creek somewhere a couple miles to her right, and other animals. Prey. These last scents lingered for a long moment in her mind, but she decided she was not hungry enough to be bothered.
Instead, she aimed herself at a sturdy looking old oak. Crouching briefly, Kora launched herself up the side of the oak, hooking her front then back claws firmly into the trunk and speedily propelling herself up with her powerful hind legs. She settled on the tallest branch that would bare her weight and lied down, resting her broad her on her large front paws. The sun crept in from between the upper levels of foliage and Kora felt warm and content. This far into the woods she felt little concern for some human turning up, and even if they did she felt she was too high up for someone to naturally spot her large tawny form. She was safe.
Kora was startled when a rasping purr erupted from her throat, yet upon consideration she was not surprised. Rare as it was, in this quiet moment of peace and beauty she felt a great sense of happiness. She could not be with her family and she was on the run, but she was alive and she felt strong and secure. Besides, her thoughts always seemed so much simpler in animal form. Perhaps she should try making her changes more permanent. She'd ponder that further. Still purring, Kora closed her eyes and hoped a nap would take her soon.
