Sam
Sitting at the back of a small class room, Sam let out a small sigh as he stared out the large panel window. He wasn’t listening to a word his teacher was saying, but that didn’t matter. It was his first day. No one expects you to pay attention on the first day, right? Besides, he had bigger concerns, namely the fact that he was once again in a new town and had to make new friends all over again.
Sam understood why he and his sister lived the way they did. They had to in order to survive. But that didn’t mean he had to like it. Resting on his desk with his arm propping up his head, Sam wondered what his friends from his old school were doing. He’d liked that school. They’d moved there right after Mom had died a year ago. He’d really hoped they would stay there forever, in that nice little red brick house Savannah had rented for them, but he could see now that it was only a foolish dream.
They’d been recognized. As luck would have it, they were at least discovered by another Skin Walker, but it had been an old friend of their father’s, one of his ‘rebel friends’, and Savannah said it would be safer if they left.
The young boy shook his head, trying to clear his head of things that couldn’t be, and focused instead on a squirrel as it scampered up one of the oak trees standing on the edge of the school’s playground. Sam envied the squirrel. He imagined how much fun it would be to become a pine martin and clamor up among the old oak’s many branches. Perhaps if he slipped off to the bathroom… No. Definitely not. What if he was seen? Savannah would kill him.
Suddenly the bell rang. Looking around, startled, Sam realized it was recess. He slowly got up from his desk and made his way out the school doors into the yard.
